The Bombers Race-Twister takes place on March 4-5, 2012 . The ski school Bombers Program will finish off their season with a fun race on Twister single course modified GS format. All parents and family can watch this fun Bombers finale on Peak 8. Breckenridge Bombers is a multi-week program that is in its 22nd year as one of the most progressive children’s ski and snowboard programs available.

If you’re planning to ski in Breckenridge, Colorado this winter, then you may be wondering which type of skis to buy. Too often people are told to buy a certain brand, when they really need straight info (we are not endorsing any brands). Here is a step-by-step guide to get you on the slopes!

When searching for the right ski, it really depends on whether or not you like to ski slow, medium or fast, and if you like to make wide, open turns, or quick, snappy ones. Also, where do you like to spend the majority of your time skiing, from beginner, intermediate and expert trails? Keep these questions in mind while going through the steps of finding the right skis.

Downhill skis are known as Alpine skis, which consist of a fixed boot, binding and the ski itself. The following categories divide up the Alpine ski family. All can be further divided into men’s, women’s and junior groupings (Note: Nordic skis are for cross- country skiing, but we are not covering those in this article).

All-Mountain Skis are designed to perform in all types of snow conditions and at most speeds. Narrower All-Mountain skis are better for groomed runs, while wider styles handle better in powder and cruddy conditions. Other names for this style of ski include Mid-Fat skis, All-Purpose skis, and the One-ski Quiver.

Powder Skis are designed to float atop powder, these are a popular back up pair of skis for those lucky enough to live in or visit places that receive frequent major storms. The mega-wide waist widths – ranging from 105mm to 130mm – keep the skis from sinking deep into fresh snow, but they can be challenging and sluggish to control on groomed runs. Sometimes they are known as Back Country or Big Mountain skis.

Twin Tip Skis have a curved-up tail along with the standard curved-up tip. Originally, Twin Tips were most popular with the freestyle set, and were used to take off or land jumps backward. Nowadays Twin Tips are also available as All-Mountain skis, though most are actually “direction twins” – slightly longer and wider in the front.

Racing Skis typically stiffer, longer and narrower than the average ski. Most race skiers know what they want, so there’s no point in going to deep here besides noting that if you’re not a racer, don’t even consider racing skis. Sometimes they are known as Slalom or GS skis. View all Racing Skis.

Now, the length of ski you choose depends on your size, the kind of skier you are and even the shape of ski you want to purchase. And today’s skis are much shorter than the planks of old. Wider, curved skis handle better if they’re shorter. Ski length is always given in centimeters.

Measure your height in centimeters. One inch equals 2.54 centimeters, so multiply your height in inches by 2.54. Write down or remember this number.

Compute your ski length. For a beginning or intermediate skier, subtract 10 to 15 centimeters from your height. If you’re an advanced skier, subtract five to 10 centimeters from your height. Look for skis within this range. Each model of ski may only be available in half a dozen lengths, so it’s a good idea to shop for a range of lengths that would be appropriate for you.

Look for a number printed on the ski, either near the center of the ski or on the tip. This will be the length of the ski in centimeters. Alternately, measure the ski from tip to tail with a tape measure.

Breckenridge Mardi Gras will kick off in style from on Friday, February 18, with it’s annual Bacchus Ball at Beaver Run Resort.

Each year, New Orleans visitors and Mardi Gras lovers take over Breckenridge with masks, boas, beads, music and revelry to commemorate the carnival season.

Breckenridge Mardi Gras will kick off in style from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18th, with it’s annual Bacchus Ball at Beaver Run Resort. Grab your masks for a New Orleans style masquerade ball at 9,600 feet.

Enjoy delicious Cajun food and drink, live music by Hazel Miller, dancing and the crowning of Breckenridge’s Mardi Gras Rex and Queen. All are encouraged to participate in the fun with masks and costumes but, if you didn’t pack your masquerade outfit, boas, beads and masks will be sold at the event.

On February 20, 2012, Hope on the Slopes avid skiers and snowboarders raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.  Hope on the Slopes is a team and individual skiing event.

Participants engage in a virtual competition with other Hope on the Slopes participants in two categories: Dollars Raised and Vertical Feet. Separate registration is required for individuals and teams.

Pledges raised through Hope on the Slopes help provide cancer patients and their families with information and support.

They also fund research that leads to improved treatments, educate the public about cancer prevention and early detection, and help ensure that everyone has access to lifesaving cancer screenings.

Breckenridge Bombers is a multi-week program that is in its 22nd year as one of the most progressive children’s ski and snowboard programs available. The Bombers Program provides coaching for all levels of skiing and riding.

The goal is to assist your child in developing solid technique in a fun, safe and confidence-building environment. Participants are with the same instructor and class for the duration of Bombers. Classes are formed based on age and ability.

Three types of Bombers programs exist: All-Mountain Bombers, Freestyle Bombers and Pee Wee Bombers.

OHA (Our Home at Breckenridge) has three kid-friendly beautiful luxurious vacation rental homes with the amenities that you would find at a 4-star hotel: kitchen, hot tub, wet bar, big screen TVs, kids play rooms… even the nicest hotel suite can’t deliver all of that.

Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, you and your kids can enjoy the snowboarding, cross country, snow shoeing, hiking, rock climbing, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, swimming, tennis, racket ball, yoga, basketball, workouts, concerts, art shows, ice sculptures and the town skating rink.

The Timber Creek Retreat includes an upper level with a “Kid Zone” and is unofficially designated as “adults by invitation only.” This super fun area houses TV, DVD, foose ball, game-cube, basketball hoop, hang-out space and plenty of bunk beds, trundles and puzzle beds with pillows for 12. It even has its own private bathroom.

On the main level, there is a subdued-elegant living room which hosts a vaulted ceiling and 20 ft rock fireplace. Immediately adjacent is the spacious dining room with seating for over ten people. The breakfast table seats 5 and the breakfast bar can hold 4 more. The kitchen features spans of granite, cabinets and a mesh of all high-tech appliances that would befit the finest restaurants.

The main level also has two large master bedrooms – with king beds, gas stoves, TV-filled armoires and access to the patio facing a quilt of pine trees. The master bathroom is “to die for”while the patio features a 10 seat hot tub and bar-b-q to grill steaks on.

The door under the “Kid Zone” sign separates the study-atmosphere of business needs: email checking, Googling, copying, faxing; or just quiet reading or snoozing. The lower level has king size suites, bathrooms, oversized TV, full-sized pool table, fireplace, pub table, wet bar, and plenty of space to sit or dance.

The Baldy Mountain Retreat has a “great room” takes your breath away with its 22-foot window-view of serenity that only the Rocky Mountains can provide. Gaze at nature, or at the LCD flat panel TV which sits above the see-through fireplace.

There is seating for eight in the dining room, or enjoy a cozy family gathering at the breakfast table. The high tech open kitchen is fully-stocked and includes includes a bar.

Unofficially designated as “adults by invitation only,” the “Kid Zone” houses a built-in movie projector/screen, DVDs, dart board, pool table, foos ball; full-bed convertible puzzle sofas, soft drink bar, games and CDs galore.

The master suite on the main floor has every amenity you could desire: King bed, armoire housing TV, Jacuzzi bathtub, separate shower and some overly-magnificent views. Directly accessible on the KidZone level, patio #2 has a sauna on your left and brand new Jacuzzi straight ahead. There is a stunning 180 degree mountain view from inside the hot tub.

The Warrior’s Retreat has a front lower level becomes its own enclave with the fabulous “KidZone.” In it is pure youth-delight: TV, DVD, game-cube, games, private hang-out space, slumber-party potential with twin-top/bottom-queen bunks, daybed, & trundle. A designated “KidZone” sign separates it from the Queen bedroom down the hall.

The main level features an open living space that includes all of the kitchen, the comfortable mountain-view living room, the spacious 10 seating dining room, the bar with stools that swivel in 360 degrees, and the wonderful deck where you, friends and family can enjoy the afternoon sun in the hot tub or barbecue; or the quiet evening glow of the patio fire pit as the sun sets.

The Great Room is just few stairs down from the main level, and itself can host its own party: Wet bar, pool table, monstrous flat screen TV, surround sound, separate King bedroom and bath; and plenty of room to lounge, sit and ruminate. One master suite is snuggled up the stairs with its King Size bed, private TV and double-sink, sunken tubbed-bathroom.
